Burying the Ayton lede! I enjoyed the “if you’re still listening” when the DA discussion finally began. Mikal has been the best player thus far, a lock for all-defense if he keeps it up, and I think he’s the second most important player moving forward, but his shooting will regress considerably (if he’s above 40% on the year I will be pleasantly surprised); I think DA is fast becoming a legitimate all-defense candidate, and the most important player on the team moving forward. Devin Booker is a great scorer, and he will clean up the turnovers, but elite defensive players are critical to slowing down opponents and elite defense leads to easier offense in transition. If DA didn’t play this year, I think we would be 1-5. Same with Mikal. I think we are 3-3 without Booker. SSS but with young players recency bias isn’t as significant. I think Booker has become slightly overrated amongst fans given his crazy efficiency and usage in the bubble (+10.8 +/-) that the rest of last year has been somewhat forgotten (+0.8 +/-).
Thanks for listening. Enjoying the Ayton/Mikal optimism but I think you are being very harsh on Book. He's still the franchise cornerstone and will be for the foreseeable future.
